Congratulations to Mr. Nathan Bishop, Dr. Julian Walker, and Prof. Casey DeRoo on their recent publication in the Journal for Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments, and Systems (JATIS)! The paper covers a study performed to control the optical figure of a thin (0.4 mm), adjustable X-ray mirror. A thin film device is built up on the back side of a glass X-ray optic using nanofabrication techniques to yield 112 piezoelectric cells on a 4 in. by 4 in. sized X-ray mirror. By applying voltage across the piezoelectric cells, a localized stress is produced, causing the glass to subtly change its shape. These shape changes can be used to correct a mirror's shape, even after being polished and mounted.
