Kenny Buffo

Graduate Teaching Assistant
Biography

Prior to attending the University of Iowa, Kenny completed his BS in Physics and Mathematics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. There, he worked on exploring new methods for probing the parameter space in which the rate of spin-independent dark matter scattering is highly suppressed. His current research interests include astronomy and instrumentation, developing adjustable X-ray optics for future applications in X-ray astrophysics.

In 2023, he was awarded NASA's Future Investigators in NASA Earth and Space Science and Technology (FINESST) Award in Astrophysics. Buffo's proposed work, entitled "Assessing the Capabilities of Adjustable X-ray Mirrors with Thin-film Actuators," focuses on the development of adjustable X-ray optics, a technology that makes a microelectronics device on the back surface of a mirror allowing it to be reshaped during operation.
