Dustin Swarm was named an Iowa Space Grant Consortium (ISGC) Graduate Research Fellow for 2019 - 2020.

Mr. Swarm, a second-year graduate student as of 2019, was selected as a fellow to support his project "Investigating Unique X-ray Sources Identified Via Machine Learning" which will develop Machine Learning algorithms to identify 'unusual' sources in the Chandra Source Catalog (CSC). The CSC contains > 300,000 unique X-ray sources observed by the Chandra X-ray Observatory over its 20-year lifetime. By finding outlier sources within this dataset, Mr. Swarm and Prof. DeRoo increases their odds of discovering sources which offer either new insight into astrophysical phenomena or that are in a relatively short-lived evolutionary state.
